| This view looking across at the shops on Burnley Road taken probably around
1950 gives the names of the shops as Duerdens Plasterers (Russell Dean had
it later) and Fred. Whiteley's Shoe Shop. Can anyone say roughly when these
shops were trading under these names. Jon Duerden's Dad ran his business
from what is now the Chemist shop. Waites Pie Shop was then Sunderlands
Bakery with a cafe above.
On the other side of the road opposite these shops there were more shops on stilts which were washed into the river during a flood. Barrie Lord tells us: It was Willy Crowther the butcher whose shop was washed away - one of my dad's mates. All he found after, when the water went down, was a marble slab he cut the meat up on!
