Sir Donald Thompson has died, posted 16th March 2005
Sir Donald Thompson, Conservative MP for the Calder Valley from 1979 until 1997, has died aged 73.
He was a member of the old West Riding and West Yorkshire County Councils, as well as Calderdale Council. He went on to become a key player in the Thatcher Government. He was a Minister for more than eight years and a Government whip.
He had heart bypass surgery 13 years ago. Sir Donald died last night in Leeds Infirmary. He lived at Lightcliffe.
He was also the director general of Friends of War Memorials, a registered charity dedicated to promoting awareness of the debt we owe to those who gave their lives in the cause of freedom. Friends of War Memorials is unique in being the only organisation of its type solely devoted to the care of war memorials of all dates and types countrywide.
