Mytholmroyd Community Centre - letter to the Mytholmroyd.net
Posted 12th June 2004
Dear Mytholmroyd Net
In March this year, the Hebden Bridge Times published a letter which questioned several aspects of how Mytholmroyd Community Centre is being run. The letter concluded by saying that "if Mytholmroyd Community Centre is to command broader respect locally, it needs to listen to and engage with its critics - it needs to change". Given this and the comprehensive critique the letter contained, I find it astonishing that nobody has replied to defend the Centre or answer the criticisms.
Mytholmroyd Community Centre perhaps suffers from a common problem faced by voluntary organisations in that too few people appear to be involved in managing and running the Centre. While it is arguable that the Centre could do something about that, residents in the area can also help.
The Centre is run by a registered charity - Mytholmroyd Community Association. Local people can become "Full" Members of the Association for £5.50 per year, or £3.50 per year for Pensioners and Under 18s (Junior Members). This membership is different from the more expensive Sports Centre membership and anybody who lives in the parishes of Blackshaw, Erringden, Hebden Royd, Heptonstall and Wadsworth can apply to be a Full Member of the Association.
I have joined the Association myself because I believe the Centre has the potential to become a valuable community resource that is held in high regard throughout the area. I hope that other people who want to see Mytholmroyd Community Centre thrive and flourish will also join the Association. The Association will be holding an Annual General Meeting, which is expected to be in the Autumn. At this, the membership elects six people to sit on the Association's Management Committee as well as the Chairman (-person), Vice Chairman and Treasurer.
If anyone wishes to become a member of Mytholmroyd Community Association, they should send or take the membership subscription together with their name, address and phone number to: Mytholmroyd Community Association, Caldene Avenue, Mytholmroyd, Hebden Bridge, HX7 5DY. They should specify whether they are applying for either Full Membership, Full Membership at the OAP rate, or Junior Membership and they should be able to collect their membership card from the Centre a few days later.
