I am trying to piece together a little bit of a jigsaw. Can anybody confirm any of the following.
As a youngster I attended Luddendenfoot Junior and Infants School, Blackwood Hall, between 1969-1974. My mother was a teacher there, and it was when I was in her class, between 1971-73, that several Halifax Town footballers appeared behind us to use one of the loos in the corridor. Mum told me that they'd been attending a funeral.
Whose funeral it was I never gave a second thought back then. But researching the history of Halifax Town it was in the late Sixties that the Rev DE Thomas of St Mary's Church of England, Luddendenfoot (adjacent to the school) became chaplain to Halifax Town. Looking back now, the only reason I could see was that the players were attending his funeral.
While at that school, harvest festivals used to be held at a barn at High Lea Farm, just up the hillside. I have several photographs from festivals over the year, with Rev Thomas featured on them. But while I was still at the school, the festivals ceased to be held at the barn. Was that because Rev Thomas was no longer around?
I've looked on the Ancestry website, and there is only one DE Thomas whose death was registered in Halifax around this time. He was David Edgar Thomas, and he died in the second quarter of 1972.
My question is: is this the same Reverend DE Thomas, and can anyone pinpoint exactly when he died.
In anticipation.

Jonathan Meynell.

Any family of Louise Vernall or Jn Wm Ashton(b 1825or 6 or 9!) and Emma Horrox (Myth 1850's then 3 Wardle St Oldham) could contact Ruth Luik at email h.luik@planet.nl. ? I live in Holland and am from the youngest daughter of Jn Wm, also Emma. She married Wm Dickinson of Oldham and went to live in S Africa.Wm took the first penny-farthing bike to SA and had to sell it to pay the import duty. A good thing as he had wanted to ride to Kimberley to find diamonds- 800 miles or more with lions! He later smuggled guns in brandy barrels to Johannesburg hoping to overthrow the Boer government, and had to jump a train to Mozambique when Emma sent a note that the cops were waiting for him at home! He went to Rhodesia and joined the British SA Plolice, later riding with Baden Powell to relieve the siege of Mafeking in 1901. I guess Emma prayed a lot those years in Johannesburg alone!

I would love to find out about how Emma's brother Sam helped decide to build the Sydney Harbour Bridge! Or find out about the younger brother of Jn Wm, called James(b 1839 Mills Rd Heywood Bury) who probably lived for years after 1850's in Mytholmroyd.

Sadly I have only just heard about the demolition of the old cottages(later a textile company) on Old Gate. My family, the Tuckers lived there variously for many years from 1900 onwards, and my great granddad had the decorators shop at the bottom of Buttress. I believe a lot was said in the press about stopping this work, but the protests were unsuccessful. Our family believed the buildings were Listed, but obviously it is not so. I would welcome any comments so that I can catch up on events.

I came across your website during my searches on Family History. I am hoping that someone here may be connected to the McDermott/Landale family line and perhaps a Crossley/Sutcliffe line - in particular connected to a Halley Sutcliffe with relatives in NSW

Hello, I have discovered this page on the net after "searching" my fathers name. His family (both mother and father) are from the Calder Valley area. My dad's name is Jack Uttley. I was very excited to read about your local historian of the same name. I do wish to find out more about family history on behalf of my father. Would a local historical society in your area have a web page of their own? Any guidance would be appreciated - thanks!
